Official MGGB Manifesto: Politburo Responds to OUTBOUND Allegations

Official MGGB Manifesto
Politburo Responds to OUTBOUND Allegations
Milwaukee Guerrilla Gay Bar would like to thank the editors and publishers of OUTBOUND, and specifically their columnist “Brent,” for featuring our organization in his July 16 column of “Skin & Steel.”  Since we’re a thrifty, zero-budget, not-for-profit organization, MGGB is always grateful for a cost-savings opportunity.  So we are especially grateful that Brent donated his monthly column space to ultimately prove exactly why Milwaukee Guerrilla Gay Bar has been so successful in our community.
That being said, we’d like to address the preposterous statements that Brent (and, despite the weak disclaimer, OUTBOUND) makes about Milwaukee Guerrilla Gay Bar.  These accusations range from silly to slanderous, from ludicrous to libelous, and ultimately reflect very poorly on OUTBOUND, a publication that should represent the entire LGBT community. Regrettably, OUTBOUND has grievously misrepresented Milwaukee Guerrilla Gay Bar in a manner that demands an apology, if not a full retraction.  How inflammatory was this column? Well, let’s just say that if we were a less playful organization, you’d be hearing from our attorney.
First and foremost, let’s get one thing straight.  Brent is correct about one and only one thing. MGGB did decide to show their pride for Pride Fest weekend.  But despite Brent’s allegations, no one at MGGB “spray painted their logo on the concrete in front of the taverns.” (sic)  This is a completely untrue statement – spray paint was never used at any time.
In fact, MGGB used nothing more than washable sidewalk chalk to decorate the parade route with our logo text.  Yes. That’s right.  Our columnist friend is hysterical, accusing a community group of vandalism, and encouraging legal action be taken.  And it’s all about washable sidewalk chalk being used on public sidewalks.
We’re sorry that you feel we defaced your “home,” Brent, but quite frankly, most people wouldn’t consider the sidewalk to be home.  And most people wouldn’t consider sidewalk chalk to be a sinister threat to the legitimacy of the LGBT community.
Per the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works, no permit is required for sidewalk chalk messaging, and therefore MGGB broke no ordinances or laws through these actions.  The logo was not offensive, did not promote a for-profit business, and could be removed quickly and easily with water. So, despite Brent’s impassionate pleas that our people “get what they deserve,” there’s no need for anyone to “turn themselves in” to the Milwaukee Police Department.  This harmless marketing practice is frequently used at community events, including Summerfest, Bastille Days, Jazz in the Park, Downtown Employee Appreciation Week, Locust Street Festival and River Rhythms.
But Brent wants you to believe that MGGB willfully damaged public property and caused a considerable cost to taxpayers. Truth be told, the only cost to taxpayers was a rainy day.  Most of the sidewalk logos were washed away by rainwater within a week.  A garden hose would have eliminated the chalk logo in less than five minutes.
Brent states that our “egotistical” action was guided by what we could “take.” But what, exactly, was taken?  MGGB is a not-for-profit organization that earns nothing from its events but the thrill of bringing new people together in new places.  We gained nothing from the sidewalk messaging but exposure, awareness and pride.  Our branding experiment allowed MGGB to be visible at the Pride Parade, which would otherwise be quite difficult and inappropriate for members of a guerrilla organization.  And this was by no means our only Pride advertising — the editors of OUTBOUND may also note that MGGB contributed full-page funding for the 2009 Pride Guide.  After enduring this editorial attack, MGGB will reconsider our support for the Pride Guide in 2010.
Next up:  let’s be clear.  The goal of MGGB is not, and never has been, to “steal the GLBT business away” by “dragging the GLBT population to straight bars.” (sic) Are we to believe that MGGB has robbed bar patrons of their right to choose?  It’s hard to imagine that a monthly 2-hour takeover event can make or break someone’s business. We offer our fans an exciting new monthly option, encourage them to take full advantage of everything Milwaukee has to offer – and they choose where to spend their dollars.
After all, MGGB was born out of frustration with the traditional “bar scene” – and to bring together a diverse group of people who may not fit convenient labels.  We are now entering our 25th consecutive month of positively promoting the citywide visibility of our LGBT community with a monthly takeover event.  By building bridges between the gay and straight communities, we are also building empowerment and confidence for our people.  For two years, these events have continued to grow and thrive through the passionate loyalty and generosity of our fans, with each month seeing greater attendance numbers than the last.  And to be fair, we have also scheduled a monthly afterparty at a LGBT establishment, following the straight bar takeover.  Despite Brent’s attempts to arouse suspicion of what we’ll do “inside your business door,” over 40 proprietors – gay and straight– can tell you exactly what MGGB has done inside their doors with the power of the LGBT dollar.  Should business owners be worried about us?  Will they cut their affiliations to MGGB, at Brent’s urging? Doubtful – since many of these business owners have already asked us to come back, and new businesses are inviting us every month to invade them.
We were perplexed by Brent’s third untrue statement, which alleges that no contact information is available on our website, and that we are dodging accountability for our “actions.”  In fact, the “About Us” page on our website (www.mkeggb.com) offers no less than six different ways to contact MGGB, including e-mail, SMS text messaging, mailing list and social networking options.  Based on the fact that we’ve accumulated over 2,000 fans over the past two years, we find it difficult to believe that anyone actually trying to contact us would have a problem doing so.
Just when we thought Brent’s accusations couldn’t be any more delusional, the OUTBOUND writer compares MGGB to anti-gay protestors, perpetrators of hate crimes, criminals, Nazis, Mobsters, gangsters, monkeys, and most carelessly of all, Julius Burton, who recently shot two Milwaukee Police Officers in Walker’s Point.  What does MGGB have in common with these undesirables?  We’re not clear.  Brent has accused MGGB of “defaming our wonderful city’s streets.”  Yet, by resorting to irresponsible and immature name-calling, he defames himself, the publication, and any LGBT establishments he is associated with.
So now that we’ve reviewed the facts, what was all this ranting and raving all about?  We still aren’t sure.  Our advice to Brent?  Stick with writing about tattoos and piercings, because you’re not cut out for journalism. Our advice to OUTBOUND?  Think twice before you publish a writer whose goal is not to support and promote readers, but to generate mistrust, hostility and hate mail.  Where exactly does encouraging those negative behaviors fit into your definition of “community?”

We were just going to ignore this lunacy, but since Brent’s most recent column again misrepresents our organization, we feel compelled to confirm some facts for OUTBOUND’s editor, staff, and readers.  This is more for your benefit than ours, since not a single one of our fans mentioned anything about this defamatory column in a full month since it was published.  How unfortunate that OUTBOUND’s attempt to generate hate mail came to nothing at all.

But Brent wants you to believe that MGGB willfully damaged public property and caused a considerable cost to taxpayers. 1. It’s funny that “Brent” slams the so-called anonymity of MGGB, when he doesn’t even use his last name in his column.

Anyway, right on with your comments. “Brent” is a classic example of a so-called “writer” with no grasp of reality (let alone responsible journalism or grammar).

    Viva MGGB!

  2. Kudos, thank you for speaking up and taking a stand against this ignorant ass!

  3. Napoleon B. Says:

Good job, Citizen X & MGGB team!
    - I see you guys are still making waves and inroads against the establishment’s status quo…providing meaningful choice and opportunity back in the hands of your people.

    I salute your efforts!

    Your brother from afar-

    Napoleon B.

  4. Anonymous Says:

If you used chalk why are you logo’s still present in front of the bars, and yes there is video of 2 of your members SPARY PAINTING, not chalking the sidewalks. MPD has the video and 2 of your actors are seen clearly SPRAY PAINTING the sidewalks.
Even scrubbing your logo with paint thinner does not remove it from the sidewalk, you are nothing more than hoodlams, and the article in Outbound is dead on the money.
Chalk would have washed off with water, this stuff is still around, so you are guilty as charged.

    • Soley Curious Says:

Do you know how to access said videos of this spray painting by MGGB?

    • Very Curious Says:

Can you please give the exact locations of where actual spray paint was used? I am very curious and would like to check it out for myself.

    • I’m sure it was spray chalk. Spray chalk cans look just like spray paint.

And although it comes out– it doesn’t come out as easily as something written with a stick of chalk would. It might take a couple of storms or a pressure washer to get out. Scrubbing the surface won’t work because the small particles get in the crevices and stuff.

  5. Dave Klawes Says:

For as long as gay people have been social animals (in other words, forever…) it has been the general wish to be accepted everywhere.

It is my admittedly limited observation this has generally come to pass. You will see gay people on the town pretty much anywhere. People go to places that provide the atmosphere they enjoy. When in a straight club you may not see same-sex couples grinding it out they way they might in a gay club, still, you *will* see “us” integrating….anywhere.

So it should surprise no one when straight club owners “reach out” to the LGBT community. Of course it is natrual to assume there is an ultimate motive at work (our money….), but more importantly, it is a positive sign that indeed “we’re everywhere”; organizations like MGGB foster a more positive social environment for us all.

Another aspect of that particular box is gay venues also understand they no longer own a monopoly on the business from the community.

I’m not sure why Brett felt he needed to create this issue.

  6. The only thing Brent is spreading in the LGBT community is Hate. Not sure if you are aware but that Guy works for the Milwaukee Pride Parade committee.

  7. Brent needs to have her–>his hormones readjusted, she–>he is getting a bit too fussy about sidewalk chalk!

Ironically enough, his fanatic rant and ignorance to accuracy is actually more relative to homophobic extremists than the accused MGGB.

And I think that people are going to MGGB events because they are tired of dealing with bitter, stagnant, hostile queens like Ms. Brent. If this is what Milwaukee’s gay nightlife looks like, it’s no wonder that MGGB events are so appealing.

  8. Why are the logos still present in front of the bars? I don’t know, Brent. Cleaned your sidewalk lately?

It seems obvious that spray chalk comes in a spray can, and that sidewalk chalk might last awhile in a summer without much rain.

This whole thing is an embarassment to OUTBOUND. The fact that they ever ran this hateful article says a lot about the values of the magazine. It reads like something from the far religious right.

  9. I have seen y’all in action in gay and straight bars. I am not a member yet But I will vouch for you all. I bartend in a gay bar but props to you all for your vision and the fun that you bring!

  10. Stop the division among LGBT organizations!
    -T

  11. Seriously, I can’t believe someone from OUTBOUND didn’t look over this article from Brent and check whether it was even SOMEWHAT valid. It should never have been published.

I have been to several MGGB takeovers and to even compare it to Nazis is ridiculous. We go, support the business, promote diversity, and have a DAMN good time mingling in the process.

If he wants to cry over some damn chalk… Go for it.

…But don’t publicly criticize a friendly gay movement that has a positive outlook.

Especially when you don’t have your facts straight. AT ALL.

  12. Brent (Skin & Steel) Says:

Hello all. And thanks to the wonderful joys of the internet I am able to directly to respond to the accusations about my motives with regard to this editorial on facebook. First off I would like to ask why this responce to my column was never sent to my email which I plainly placed in each column? But aside from that. I would like to reiterate on what the “Anonymous” has stated. If you used chalk then why is your logo STILL in front of the establishments( as of 8-12-09) and the sidewalks near Henry Mier Festival Park still there?? If you don’t believe me then go look for yourself! Also there is plenty of video (apart from the single video mentioned in the above post) from numerous businesses that clearly show Spray paint being used.
That really is all that I have to say here. I will save my Offical responce to this for my column. Also I need to say that these are MY views, please do not get them confused with the views of Outbound. Outbound has absolutly no place within this discussion, it is between the members of MGGB and myself.

    • Very Curious Says:

Can you please leave an exact location? Also, what police department has this video?

      • Brent (Skin & Steel) Says:

Locations of the spray paint can be seen in front of 209 E. National. Club Boom/Room on 2nd street (625 2. 2nd) The Milwaukee Police department is in possesion of any video’s to my knowledge. Please contact them for information/acess to it.

    • “Also there is plenty of video … from numerous businesses that clearly show Spray paint being used”

You know spray chalk looks just like spray paint, right?

“why is your logo STILL in front of the establishments”

Because unlike stick chalk, spray chalk lasts about 15-20 days depending on weather and traffic conditions.

  13. Soley Curious Says:

FYI, Outbound’s online article from July 16th has no information about Brent’s article. You’ll need to hunt down a hard copy.

  14. Dr. Lucas Says:

I have to say that not only is the article poorly written in terms of grammar and mechanics (does Outbound have editors?!), but it’s also a textbook example of all the things one ought not to do in argumentation — straw man arguments (Nazis, murderers, and gay bashers, oh my!), ad hominem attacks, and the like.

I also really dislike his denigration of the long and kick-ass tradition of LGBTQ guerrilla activism. I wonder what the author would have thought about Act Up’s tactics in the ’80s and 90s!

  15. EditorMan Says:

Brent’s article was outrageous and an inappropriate use of his editorial access (penning a column about ink and piercings). OUTBOUND has never been a home for intelligent, proof-read content (has anyone ever read “Cordially Yours?”). Milwaukee can and should do better.

MGGB is a thoughtful complement to the existing gay nightlife in Milwaukee. If nothing else, I am glad they are getting all this free publicity.

  16. Che GayVera Says:

All I can say is what a douchebag!!!

When I was a more active member of MGGB, I recall owners of both straight and gay bars congratulating us and asking us to come to their business. Because of MGGB, I have met innumerable new people that I otherwise would have not encountered.

For Pete’s sake Kramp from FM 102.1 thanked MGGB on the air after the Vittucci’s takeover in June. Why? Because we brought in a fun crowd and he had a good time.

How is MGGB taking away business from LGBT bars when there’s an afterparty at a LGBT bar for every takeover? If anything we’re helping bar owners by bringing more clientele out for the night who are spending money in their establishments.

Also: In the month of July we got less than 1 inch of rain, which isn’t enough to wash off sidewalk chalk.

  17. State of emergency has been called today due to the long drought in Wisconsin. No wonder these chalk tags are still around. Get out a scrub brush if you’re so offended.

Friends have told me how comfortable they have been at MGGB events because they are so friendly and accepting. Even some T-girls I know feel so safe, even going into a straight college bar and being themselves, thanks to MGGB. They would not have this experience safely without it. They would be treated like subhuman freaks and possibly victims of violence without the strength in numbers. I applaud MGGB for empowering my friends, giving them new friends, and making them feel good about themselves.

As a parent, taxpayer and small business owner, I would welcome MGGB logos on my sidewalks anyday. It is a symbol of not only their pride, but my own. Pride in positive actions, not negative ones. Pride in the power of our people to expect fair and equal treatment.

And I will think twice before letting OUTBOUND in my business doors ever again.

  18. Hopelessly Optimistic in MKE Says:

Brent and OUTBOUND (even though Brent suggests that they have NO responsibility and control of their own editorial decisions), represent the intolerance and rigidity of the old LGBT status quo. This is a dying gasp and desperate attack from a frightened group that sees the power of the LGBT community diffusing into the larger community. Sorry, self-appointed and self-important “leaders” that do not offer positive change do not speak for the larger LGBT community. MGGB at least does not purport to be the voice of the LGBT community even though its events bring in a very diverse group. Sad OUTBOUND will fade into obscurity like other self-interested publications and interests that no longer are relevant.

  19. Just me.. Says:

I asked for specific locations, here’s what I received:
“Boom/Room, Boot Camp, Kruz, Harbor Room, Fluid, Probably Triangle, Fluid, LaCage. Boom/Room, Boot Camp, Kruz, Harbor Room, Fluid, Probably Triangle, Fluid, LaCage. I am well aware that chalk wash’s off with water and foot traffic, How ever spray paint does not.
One of the bars has video footage of people SPRAY painting not using chalk, and that has been turned over to MPD.

Needless to say the owners of the bars that had their sidewalks vandalized with SPRAY PAINT are pissed. IF MGGB has nothing to hide then perhaps they should out their organizer(s) so that MPD can talk with them. But I am guessing that, that will never happen now will it, as the chicken shit organizer will hide behind the anonymous websites on facebook, twitter, and the other site listed online for contact, Right?”

Wondering if Chip Wegner II is “Brent”? Similar writing styles…

    • BrentIsAnIdiot Says:

Listen up, Brent! You say that bar owners are pissed, and yet several have been talked to who didn’t care about the CHALKED logo on their doorsteps. MGGB had a successful afterparty almost a week ago and the LGBT venue LOVED that the Guerillas were coming.

What you don’t get is that SPRAY CHALK comes in a SPRAY CAN and although from fuzzy surveillance footage it may look like spray paint, it is not. Spray chalk + zero rain = Brent Is An Idiot.

By knowing where you work when you’re not torturing the pierced and inked or writing abysmally for a trashy publication, I believe your need to cry foul is really a childish reaction to the fact that MGGB has never asked your place of employment to be the site of an afterparty venue. And why would we? Quite frankly, I took a bit of a poll last Friday and the consensus was that your place of employment was unfriendly and that even the “gays” did not feel welcome.

How can you make accurate statements about an organization in which you have never attended an event?

  20. LaMoanDArc Says:

    Bent,

You’re article was not only base on non-truths, but defamatory to a true ‘Community Organization’ in the best sense of the term. The historical equivocations were over the top and outright salacious. Under different circumstances ‘libelous’.

You were wrong. The bar owners know you are wrong. The members know you are wrong. The police know you are wrong. It’s not that hard to figure out who are the caretakers of MGGB and I’m sure they would have been contacted. For crying out loud even your editor knows you were wrong. You do not deserve a direct communication — but YOU, sir, owe a published apology.

I’m not getting my hopes up that you will apologize even though it is the right thing for you to do. You still seem caught up in some childlike need for attention instead of a mature contributor to the the community. Hell, you aren’t even responsible enough to determine the ‘truth’ but rather steadfastly defend ridiculous stance that paint was used.

Either get a clue or join the flat earth society. They are looking for people like you.

  21. Ok all these people talking about videos– can any of them show the fine detail needed to READ THE LABELS on the spray cans? I went into a hardware store and found SPRAY CANS OF CHALK– not paint, that looked exactly like paint cans. So how can anyone prove whether it was in fact spray chalk or spray paint? The videos WILL NOT be able to show that. I did personally see one sign being sprayed on a sidewalk by the MGGB people (3rd of July I think it was) and did see the can- it was UTILITY CHALK– in a SPRAY CAN. Can this Brent idiot understand that everything in a spray can is NOT necessarily paint? It could have been hair spray! LOL

  22. 1) From what I can tell ore than 3/4 of the logos have washed away. I’d say it is a safe assumption that spray chalk (which, oddly enough) comes in a can – was used for these logos. The one’s that have not been washed away could possibly be in low traffic areas, or maybe hidden from water. Or maybe no one has taken the time to dump a bucket of water on it.

    2) Doesn’t this guy BOUCE at Bootcamp? Isn’t Bootcamp the most exclusive bar in the city? I mean if you are not a leather daddy or bear or big masculine man, they refuse to let you enter.

Don’t even try if you are a girl.

The business has every right to refuse whom ever they want, but my point is that I find this guy to be pretty conflicted. Lecturing on gay community and such, yet he works for the very establishment that segregates our community more than any other.
